What is a Standard Pigtail?

A standard pigtail is a fiber optic cable assembly with a connector pre-installed on one end and a bare fiber on the other, designed for fusion splicing to the outgoing fiber of an ODF, splice closure, or terminal box. The connectorized end provides a reusable, plug-and-play interface to active equipment or patch panels, while the bare end is permanently joined to the distribution fiber using a fusion splicer. Standard pigtails are deployed wherever a permanent, low-loss connection between an incoming distribution cable and active equipment is required. In FTTH networks, they terminate feeder cables at the splitter input ports or customer-side drop cables in building distribution boxes. In central office ODFs (Optical Distribution Frames), pigtails connect incoming feeder cables from the access network to the switch ports via the cross-connect field. Inside splice closures, they extend the spliced fibers to a connectorized interface for testing or drop cable termination. Cable TV head-ends use pigtails to terminate the optical input of EDFAs and transmitters, while enterprise networks deploy them at floor distributors to terminate horizontal backbone cables.
