What is an Armored Patch Cord?

An armored patch cord is a fiber optic cable assembly reinforced with a metallic or non-metallic armor layer between the inner fiber core and outer jacket, providing exceptional crush resistance, rodent protection, and mechanical durability. OMC manufactures armored patch cords using a helical wrap of stainless steel or aluminum armor tube, combined with aramid strength members and a flexible LSZH outer jacket. The result is a cable that withstands crush loads exceeding 1000 N/10 cm while maintaining a bend radius as small as 10× cable diameter. Despite its rugged construction, the armored patch cord retains the same optical performance as a standard patchcord, with insertion loss ≤0.3 dB (SM UPC) and return loss ≥50 dB.

Construction and Mechanical Properties

The armored patch cord features a multi-layer design: the innermost layer contains the optical fiber (SMF-28e or multimode OM3/OM4) with 900µm tight buffer; surrounding this is a layer of aramid yarn for tensile strength; the next layer is the helical-wound stainless steel 304 armor providing crush resistance and rodent deterrence; and the outermost layer is a flame-retardant LSZH or PE jacket. Typical outer diameter is 3.0 mm or 4.0 mm, allowing compatibility with standard patch panels and adapters. The cable is rated for operating temperatures from -40°C to +85°C, making it suitable for industrial and outdoor-adjacent installations. Tensile strength reaches 200 N for short-term and 100 N for long-term loading.

Where Armored Patch Cords Are Deployed

Armored patch cords are specified in environments where standard patch cords would fail mechanically. Industrial sites such as factories, mines, and power plants deploy them to interconnect SCADA systems, motor control centers, and instrumentation networks where crush from foot traffic, falling tools, or rolling equipment is a risk. Data center raised floor installations benefit from armored cords to prevent damage during tile lifting and cable rerouting. Military and tactical field communications use armored variants for their EMI resilience and mechanical survivability. Outdoor cabinet terminations, railway signaling, and oil & gas platforms deploy armored cords at the boundary between indoor electronics and outdoor plant. Rodent-prone areas (warehouses, agricultural facilities) also specify armored cords to prevent cable damage from gnawing pests.

Types of Armor: Steel vs Aluminum vs Non-Metallic

OMC offers three armor constructions to match application requirements. Stainless steel 304 armored patch cords provide the highest crush resistance (up to 4000 N/10 cm) and excellent rodent protection, ideal for industrial and outdoor applications. They add approximately 30% weight compared to standard patch cords. Aluminum armor offers moderate crush resistance (up to 1500 N/10 cm) with lighter weight, suitable for indoor/outdoor transitions where some mechanical protection is needed without the weight penalty of steel. Non-metallic armored patch cords use aramid braid (Kevlar) or fiberglass yarn as the strength member for environments where metallic armor is prohibited, such as high-voltage substations, MRI rooms, or applications requiring lightning strike protection without ground loop issues.

Ordering Guide and Customization

To specify an OMC armored patch cord, define the connector type and polish at each end, fiber type (SM G.652.D/G.657.A1 or MM OM3/OM4), cable length, jacket material (LSZH/PVC/PE), and armor type (stainless steel/aluminum/non-metallic). Common configurations include SC/APC-LC/UPC armored cords for FTTA (Fiber to the Antenna) deployments and LC/UPC-LC/UPC armored cords for industrial data centers. OMC supports custom lengths from 1 m to 200 m, custom labeling, and pre-terminated pulling eye solutions for horizontal cable routing. Each armored patch cord is 100% tested for optical performance and 100% tested for armor continuity and crush resistance. Volume orders exceeding 500 pieces qualify for project pricing.
