Multifiber cable assemblies are pre-terminated fiber optic cable products that bundle multiple optical fibers within a single outer jacket, terminated with single-fiber connectors (SC, LC, ST, FC) or multi-fiber connectors (MTP/MPO) at one or both ends. They replace the need for multiple individual patch cords with a single, organized cable run, dramatically reducing cable congestion, installation time, and pathway fill in high-density environments. OMC's multifiber cable assemblies are available in fiber counts from 2 to 144 fibers, using single-mode (OS2), multimode (OM3/OM4/OM5), or mixed fiber configurations. Each assembly is factory-terminated and 100% tested for insertion loss and return loss on every fiber, providing guaranteed plug-and-play deployment.
Multifiber cable assemblies are built using two primary cable constructions tailored to different deployment scenarios. Breakout cable (also called fanout) construction features individual 2.0 mm or 3.0 mm jacketed subunits for each fiber, allowing direct connection to standard single-fiber adapters without additional fanout kits. This is preferred for shorter runs and equipment room terminations where the cable enters a patch panel directly. Distribution cable construction uses 900µm tight-buffered fibers within a common outer jacket, requiring a fanout kit to separate individual fibers at the termination point. Distribution cables are smaller in diameter and lighter weight for the same fiber count, making them ideal for longer runs through cable trays and conduit. OMC supports both constructions with custom fiber counts from 2 to 144 fibers.
For maximum density, OMC's multifiber cable assemblies leverage MTP/MPO multi-fiber connectors that terminate 8, 12, 16, 24, or 48 fibers in a single ferrule footprint. A 12-fiber MPO connector occupies the same space as a single SC connector but carries 12 times the fiber capacity, making it the foundation of modern 40G/100G/400G data center architectures. OMC's MPO assemblies use US Conec MTP Elite or MTP Pro connectors with insertion loss ≤0.35 dB (standard) or ≤0.25 dB (Elite low-loss grade). Polarity options (Type A, Type B, Type C) and pin configurations (pinned male / unpinned female) are clearly labeled and tested per TIA-568 and IEC 61754-7 standards. Array assemblies combining MPO at one end and LC/SC fanout at the other are available for transitioning between trunk and patch panel zones.
Multifiber cable assemblies are essential building blocks in spine-leaf data center architectures, where they serve as the permanent link between ToR (Top of Rack) switches and End-of-Row distribution areas. They form the backbone of structured cabling per TIA-942 and EN 50173, with MPO-based assemblies supporting 40G SR4, 100G SR4, 400G SR4.2, and emerging 800G deployments. In telecom central offices, multifiber assemblies interconnect ODF frames between equipment rows, simplifying moves/adds/changes. Every OMC multifiber cable assembly undergoes comprehensive factory testing including per-channel insertion loss measurement with a calibrated light source and power meter, return loss verification per channel, end-face geometry inspection per IEC 61300-3-35, and 100% continuity test to verify correct fiber mapping from end to end. Test results are recorded against each assembly's serial number and shipped with the product as a printed report and electronic file. For large projects, OMC provides pre-labeled assemblies with custom barcoding and bag-tag identification matching the customer's installation drawings.
