Outdoor fiber optic cable is specifically engineered to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of external plant installations: temperature extremes, moisture ingress, UV radiation, wind, ice loading, and mechanical stress from installation tension and ground movement. Unlike indoor cables with flame-retardant jackets, outdoor cables use PE (Polyethylene) jackets that resist UV degradation and water penetration across decades of service life. OMC's outdoor cable portfolio covers single-mode and multimode constructions in fiber counts from 2 to 576 cores, serving telecom backbone networks, utility SCADA links, CATV distribution, intelligent transportation systems, and rural broadband access networks. The standard outdoor cable construction uses gel-filled loose tube technology where multiple bare fibers (250 µm) are placed inside thermoplastic buffer tubes filled with thixotropic water-blocking gel. The gel prevents water migration along the cable core by capillary action, protecting the fibers from hydrogen-induced attenuation and physical damage caused by ice lens formation during freeze-thaw cycles. Water-blocking yarns and tapes around the central strength member and beneath the outer jacket provide additional longitudinal water blocking. For high-fiber-count cables (72 to 576 cores), multiple buffer tubes are stranded around a central strength member in a helical or SZ layer sequence per IEC 60794-1-2 Method F1, allowing thermal expansion and contraction without inducing fiber strain.
OMC outdoor cables are available in three mechanical configurations matched to the installation method. Duct cable (GYTA/GYTS) is the most versatile, designed for installation by pulling or blowing into HDPE or PVC ducts, with moderate crush resistance (1000-2000 N/10 cm) and PE jacket for UV and moisture protection. Direct burial cable (GYTA53/GYTY53) adds corrugated steel tape armor between the inner and outer PE jackets, providing crush resistance up to 3000 N/10 cm and rodent protection for direct ground burial without duct. Aerial cable (GYTC8S/GYFXTC8Y) integrates a stranded steel messenger wire into the jacket for self-supporting pole-to-pole spans of 50-100 meters, while ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cable uses fiberglass strength members eliminating the need for grounding and suitable for installation on high-voltage power lines.
OMC outdoor cables are rated for extreme operating temperature ranges to ensure reliable performance across all climate zones. Standard outdoor cables operate from -30°C to +70°C, while extended-range cables rated -40°C to +70°C are available for cold-climate deployments in northern latitudes and high-altitude installations. Cable tracking tests confirm no jacket cracking or gel migration at temperature extremes. UV resistance is verified by 1000-hour xenon arc lamp exposure per ASTM D2565, ensuring the PE jacket retains mechanical properties after years of direct sunlight exposure. Anti-tracking additives in the jacket prevent carbon-track formation that could create conduction paths in wet environments. All cables meet IEC 60794-1-2 environmental test methods including temperature cycling, water penetration, impact, and crush.
