An MPO trunk cable is a pre-terminated multi-fiber assembly with MPO (Mechanical Push-On) connectors at both ends, designed to serve as the permanent high-capacity backbone link in data center structured cabling systems. The MPO connector terminates 8, 12, 16, 24, or 48 fibers in a single ferrule, dramatically increasing installation density and reducing termination time compared to individual single-fiber connectors. OMC's MPO trunk cables use US Conec MTP Elite or standard MTP connectors, premium bend-insensitive single-mode (G.657.A1/A2) or laser-optimized multimode (OM3/OM4/OM5) fibers, and are 100% factory-tested for insertion loss, return loss, and end-face geometry. Available in standard lengths from 1 m to 300 m, MPO trunk cables form the spine of modern 40G/100G/400G data center architectures compliant with IEEE 802.3bm, TIA-568.3, and IEC 61754-7.
The MPO connector (Multi-fiber Push-On, standardized as IEC 61754-7) uses a precision-molded polymer or metal ferrule with 8, 12, 16, 24, or 48 fiber holes arranged in a linear array. The ferrule end-face is physically contacted (PC) polished, and keying features on the housing ensure correct orientation during mating. Standard MPO connectors have typical insertion loss of ≤0.5 dB per channel (multi-mode) or ≤0.75 dB (single-mode), while MTP Elite (US Conec) achieves ≤0.35 dB typical and ≤0.25 dB for single-mode APC variants. Each MPO connector is pinned (male, with two precision guide pins) or unpinned (female, with two precision guide holes) to ensure consistent fiber-to-fiber alignment. The housing includes a push-pull extraction tab for easy installation in high-density 1U or 4U patch panels where fingers may not have clearance for traditional boot-based extraction.
MPO trunk cables are the physical layer foundation for modern data center switch-to-switch and switch-to-server architectures. For 40G Ethernet, a single 12-fiber MPO trunk cable connects a 40G QSFP+ switch port to three 10G SFP+ server ports using parallel optics (4 fibers TX, 4 fibers RX, 4 unused), per IEEE 802.3ba. For 100G SR4, a 12-fiber MPO trunk connects one 100G QSFP28 port to four 25G SFP28 servers using 4 wavelength lanes per direction. Emerging 400G Ethernet (SR4.2, SR8, DR4) uses 8 or 16-fiber MPO connections, and 800G links will scale to 16 or 32-fiber MPO trunk cables. OMC supports all these applications with OM4/OM5 multimode and OS2 single-mode MPO trunk cables, with custom fiber counts and polarity configurations per TIA-568.0-D and EN 50173-1.
Polarity management is critical in MPO trunk cable systems to ensure that transmit signals from one device correctly reach the receive ports of the connected device. OMC offers all three standard polarity methods. Type A (straight-through) maintains the same fiber sequence from end to end: fiber 1 at connector A connects to fiber 1 at connector B. This requires Type A to Type B array cords at the equipment end to maintain correct polarity. Type B (reversed) flips the fiber sequence, with fiber 1 at A connecting to fiber 12 at B, enabling same-polarity array cords at equipment. Type C (pair-reversed) swaps adjacent fiber pairs (1↔2, 3↔4, etc.), used for duplex channel applications. OMC clearly labels polarity and pinout on every MPO trunk cable and provides polarity conversion services for mixed-polarity deployments.
OMC MPO trunk cables are available in fiber counts of 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, and 48 fibers per MPO connector, with OM3, OM4, OM5 multimode or G.657.A1/A2 bend-insensitive single-mode fibers. Standard jacket materials include LSZH, Plenum (OFNP), and PVC, with outer diameters scaled to fiber count (typically 3.0-8.0 mm). Each MPO trunk cable undergoes 100% factory testing including: OTDR trace per fiber at 850/1300 nm (MM) or 1310/1550 nm (SM), insertion loss measurement with encircled flux launch conditions per TIA-455-171-A, return loss measurement per channel, and interferometric end-face geometry inspection. Test reports with individual fiber data are serialized and shipped with every assembly. Custom options include ultra-low-loss MTP Elite connectors (≤0.25 dB), color-coded jacket per fiber type (aqua for OM4, lime for OM5), and custom labeling with network zone identifiers.
